New articles

Shalom, Marrovi. We are truly thankful for your contributions. I wonder if you wouldn't mind trying to expand at least a few of these articles into items longer than stubs. Thanks. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 23 Tammuz 5776 • 15:09 29 Jul 2016 (UTC)

Also ... if you are going to use the template {{Sivdad}}, would you mind updating the coordinates when you copy and paste? Coordinates are available from Wikidata at {{#property:P625}}. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 23 Tammuz 5776 • 15:35 29 Jul 2016 (UTC)
Repeating the last request. At this point you're now pasting coordinates, altitude, sometimes population from Juliantla. So if I need to fix them, it's double-work. Thanks.
I've created a temporary, substitutable template at {{State}}. If you insert it (substituted) after the line for paez in {{Sivdad}}, there will be a place for the estado. Then on next edit, you can add the estado and its link. See Mexicali for an example. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 26 Tammuz 5776 • 14:40 1 Ago 2016 (UTC)

Empty (or nearly empty) categories

You've been doing a lot of hard work. We really appreciate that!

Can we talk about categories? In the best case, we could have categories of cities for every Mexican state. But usually if there are not at least three items in a category, it is not worth making a category. So ... decide what categories you created that are unlikely to get three items, delete them, and recategorize pages "up one level" (like Sivdades de [estado] > Sivdades de Meshiko). Thanks. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 7 Av 5776 • 16:38 11 Ago 2016 (UTC)

Ok, now is made all changes. See you.--Marrovi (discusión) 17:45 11 Ago 2016 (UTC)

Update on new page patrol as of 16:41 19 Ago 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Marrovi. Shabbat Shalom.

I have been doing new page patrol: see this page. Starting from oldest to newest, I have looked at all pages created through July 31. Any page that had no incorrect data I marked as patrolled, and usually added additional information (like coordinates). But the pages left here all need to be corrected and updated, for population or coordinates or both. Would you mind taking care of some of this, please? Thanks. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 15 Av 5776 • 16:41 19 Ago 2016 (UTC)

Corregir páginas

(I used Google Translate to write this.)

No quiero eliminar páginas.

--Universal Life (discusión) 13:20 21 Nov 2016 (UTC)

--Universal Life (discusión) 13:51 21 Nov 2016 (UTC)
--Universal Life (discusión) 14:11 21 Nov 2016 (UTC)
--Universal Life (discusión) 14:54 21 Nov 2016 (UTC)
--Universal Life (discusión) 15:17 21 Nov 2016 (UTC)

--Universal Life (discusión) 11:07 26 Nov 2016 (UTC)

--Universal Life (discusión) 11:21 26 Nov 2016 (UTC)

Flag templates

(as always, it's easier for me to write in English) Hi, Marrovi. These templates are useful, and we should probably have had them long ago. Thank you for doing them. Let me make a couple of requests for when you do these in the future:

  1. Go ahead and create links within Wikidata. (The eswiki template to link to is probably usually Plantilla:XXX.) We want to do that anyway. In addition, when you do that, you'll pick up the occasional spot where you've really used the wrong code for the template. (Example: {{JAP}}. I moved that to {{JPN}}, leaving behind a redirect, because the ISO code is JPN, even though IOC and FIFA use JAP. Most other Wikipedias have that template at JPN.)
  2. Please copy and paste the following code into the template: <noinclude>{{subst:XCB}}</noinclude>. That will place the template, but not its transclusions, into Kateggoría:Xablónes con bandyeras. That way they will be in one place and we can easily keep track of them.

Thanks again. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 16 Kislev 5777 • 16:25 16 Diz 2016 (UTC)

The discussion on Meta about you

I'd like to quietly offer you some advice, too.

As you know, Universal Life and I have not commented over there (other than on technical issues), and our position is to be neutral on that. You contribute a lot here, and our Ladino Wikipedia would be poorer for not having you contribute.

All that having been said, some of the criticisms that have been made over there—especially some of the things that User:Banjo from Galego Wikipedia said—are things we have seen here, too. You have cut-and-pasted things without thinking, leaving wrong population, area, and location data in place. You have placed information in articles that has no proof in reliable sources.

Remember: verifiability is more important than truth. (See es:WP:VER, en:WP:V and en:WP:TRUE.) Something that you believe is true—like Castro's supposed Sefardi ancestry—and that may in fact be true—cannot be included unless you can find a reliable source to prove it. And while this small wiki is notably short on included internal references, I have to take anything out that is likely to be controversial if you don't show proof.

You only got close to name-calling once here, as far as I know, and you backed away. Personal attacks are the best way to get one of us to block you here. So be careful. And I appreciate that you have started building out some of the stubs, especially on Mexico topics. Please keep doing that.

So here are the things I'd really strongly request of you here:

  1. Mostly don't create any new pages for a while. Build on the substantial work you have already done here. Make sure you have correctly updated the populations, coordinates, etc. of your pages. Build out stubs into more complete articles. Don't worry too much about creating parallel orthography pages for most topics; one Latin-orthography version, plus a Hebrew-orthography version, is usually more than enough.
  2. Try very hard to stay away from opinion and stay close to facts that you can verify with reliable sources. If you have a doubt about something, ask for advice.
  3. Don't mass-change items and language that are in wide use here. Ping Universal Life first and get feedback. If he doesn't reply within about two weeks, go ahead. But making changes that affect a lot of pages can be annoying to other contributors.

If you can stick to those things, we will be very happy for you to continue to edit here at Ladino Wikipedia. There are just not enough Ladino speakers available to contribute, and we hate to lose any—especially one who contributes as enthusiastically as you do.

But ... you need to stop making the kinds of mistakes outlined on the Meta talk page. It takes us a lot of time and energy to check your work—time and energy we don't have. If we start finding a lot of content that is wrong or inappropriate here, then we will have to block you locally—if for no other reason so that we can catch up on reviewing your work. You may end up not being banned or blocked globally, but still be banned or blocked locally on every Wikipedia you care about. I don't want to see that happen, and I don't think you do, either. So please try to be more careful in contributing here. Thank you for listening. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 16 Kislev 5777 • 16:51 16 Diz 2016 (UTC)

I know I don't check into here as often as I used to, but I just logged in and saw a lot of content written in Spanish, not in Judeo-Spanish. I know the languages are very similar, but there are words and expressions that are simply non-existent in JS, and in addition to that, please respect the writing system used. If you are writing an article in Aki Yerushalayim, awesome, but it's not just as changing C for K, Y for DJ and S for Z in Spanish, and walla -it's in Judeo-Spanish. Also, Aki Yerushalayim is a writing system without á, é, í, ó, ú. Please do not take me wrong, or Universal Life or ‎StevenJ81 -we really value your contributions, but we need to raise the quality of the articles, even more being an endangered language. In addition to that, we are preparing a project at Wikimedia Israel that will bring new editors, and I would rather have them see good articles, regardless if they are stubs, but with proper JS and proper editing. Please see this for an example. Let's strive for quality, please. --Maor X (discusión) 19:24 5 Jen 2017 (UTC)

Marrovi, I don't think this template is necessary or worthwhile. How is it different from {{Infobox payiz}}? Can we please redirect it to that one?

Also: please be careful about renaming templates, like {{Infobox país}} > {{Infobox payiz}}. It's usually not necessary, and can lead to broken links. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 16 Kislev 5777 • 17:13 16 Diz 2016 (UTC)

Population categories and other categories

Marrovi.

We just don't need anywhere near that many population categories. Can you consider condensing them to (maybe) five or so? StevenJ81 (discusión) • 13 Teveth 5777 • 16:05 11 Jen 2017 (UTC)

In a similar way, I think you are tending to overcategorize in other areas a great deal, too. Consider Kateggoría:Şalom. What's the point? Yes, it does have three entries, which is a typical outright minimum that we tend to think of for categories. But even trwiki and hewiki don't have a separate category for Şalom. So I just wouldn't go there. When categories are that fine-grained—especially in a small wiki like this—they're not so useful. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 14 Teveth 5777 • 19:17 11 Jen 2017 (UTC)

Time to fix "33.080"

Lots of Mexican municipalities with a population of 33.080. Please fix promptly. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 21 Teveth 5777 • 19:21 18 Jen 2017 (UTC)

Thanks ... and Warning

Marrovi, I appreciate your fixing the articles I tagged. Thank you.

At the same time, making a comment like "Datos insignificantes, no son motivo de borrado, eso lo puede areglar cualquier usuario" is entirely inappropriate. There aren't a lot of contributors here, so you can't expect someone to come back around and clean up after you. Additionally, it's one thing to make a mistake sometimes and hope someone else will fix it. It's another to be entirely sloppy about creating pages, and then to say, "it's not important, anyone can fix it". No. It's your responsibility to get it reasonably correct to start with.

If that's going to be your attitude to editing, then I need to block you as a vandal. And I've been advised by stewards that intentionally creating pages with unchecked information can be considered vandalism. Mostly, I don't want to block you. But I also can't keep up with you. So if I tag pages for correction, or leave you a message requesting corrections, please just do that, and don't start telling us it's not your job. If you continue to have that kind of attitude, I will start implementing blocks of increasing length, if for no other reason than that I would want to stop you from creating new material while I fix your mistakes. Please don't make me do that.

Notifying @Universal Life and Maor X. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 21 Teveth 5777 • 01:56 19 Jen 2017 (UTC)

{{Referensias}}

On the whole, I agree well enough with most of what you have said here. I do want to keep our working relationship cordial. But I must respectfully disagree with you on a few things.
  • There is almost no risk that this wiki will disappear, even if it does not continue to grow. I am an administrator and bureaucrat on Incubator, and work closely with the Langcom. And I have been told very clearly that it is against policy to delete wikis absent very strong and specific reasons to do so, none of which apply to ladwiki.
  • If the situation were that you wrote articles, occasionally made some data or other similar errors, and someone like me needed to come along and fix them, that would be entirely fine and appropriate. But when you essentially create 15 articles by cutting and pasting the same information, and it is wrong in 14 of them, then what you're doing is not contributing to the community, but simply creating busy work for other contributors. And if I were a fluent judeoespañol speaker, what you would be doing would be to prevent me from spending time writing pages I want to write in order to spend time correcting pages that you wrote. And that is inappropriate. Now, I never mean that you can't paste 15 pages in quick succession, and then more-or-less right away go back and touch them up. But when the uncorrected pages have already been here for months, we have a problem.
  • This is not about what Akapochtli is trying to do at Meta or at his other wiki. But on that page, I also see that you have been banned at eswiki for this kind of thing, and members of other wikis (who do not support a global ban) say that they must go back and review each and every edit you make. We just don't have enough people here to do that. So if you are going to make changes in such a way that we have to review each and every one you make, we just can't continue to do that. And in that case, we'd have to ask you to stop contributing.
  • As for what templates I use, I created something to get your attention. I adapted it from the {{delete}} template, which already existed here. And the template {{referensias}} doesn't really cover most of the cases. (Tijuana, yes. Others, no.) If I am seeing 15 pages having the same population, it's not a question of whether you have references to support what you've written. Clearly it's wrong in most of those cases, and you need to fix them. So it's not a problem of bad references, it's a problem of the page needing work. Consider {{problemas}} the equivalent of en:Template:Cleanup, or one of the more specific versions of the cleanup template on enwiki.
You don't need to copy and paste to my talk page. I'm watching for your responses here.
What I want is for you to care that your editing is sloppy, and for you to go back to every page you have created and checked it for accuracy. That's what you need to do.
Please just do that and don't answer me. I am starting Shiva Tuesday, so will be offline for a bit. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 25 Teveth 5777 • 18:40 22 Jen 2017 (UTC)

Ortografia

Exemplo: Em Estados Unidos de Amerika tu escreveste איסטאדוס אונידוס די אמריקה, mas, acredito eu e seguindo a lógica do Universal Life, escreve-se איסטאדוס אונידוס די אמיריקה.Luis Gabriel Moraes Dias (discusión) 16:42 2 Feb 2017 (UTC)

There are still three pages showing this population, and they're all wrong (according to enwiki and eswiki). StevenJ81 (discusión) • 19 Shevat 5777 • 21:49 14 Feb 2017 (UTC)

Serious question about multiple article versions

I have mentioned to you that I have serious problems having multiple (Latin-alphabet) article versions when some of them are pretty complete articles and some are stubs. I'll give three examples here:

  • Venezuela — This is a long, full article. But the Turkish-spelling one is a stub with little information. The real question here is whether anyone coming here to look for information on Venezuela can read the Turkish one but cannot read the other one. Somehow, I really doubt that's true.
  • Asientos (belediye) — Again, the Aki version is fine. But what does the Unida version add?
  • Mexico (country) — Aki and Haquetia are fine. Turkish borderline but ok. Hebrew-script stays anyway because of its historical role in JS. But, again, why have the Unida version? It doesn't really add anything.

Obviously, there is a reason we have the home page in many different versions, though even here the bottom of the page (which is a template) only uses one. But other than that, I would be much happier if we created more articles than to create more versions of articles we already have. (Exception: I will always be happy to have lad-hebr pages.) At minimum, that's how I'd encourage you to go forward. Optimally, I'd get your permission to delete the sub-standard stub pages. Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 19 Shevat 5777 • 22:12 14 Feb 2017 (UTC)

Many orthographies

Ok very well, is very interesting your reasons, I want extend in Turkish orthography and historical Hebrew orthography, I prefer delete other articles as UNIDA and French, only I use three orthographies, Aki Yerushalayim, Turkish and Hebrew, I can use others but is very difficult put tension and actuality. I accept to delete a small articles or change the edition for only one.--Marrovi (discusión) 22:29 14 Feb 2017 (UTC)

Fine. Don't delete French or Unida spelling on pages you didn't create. But on pages you created feel free. Thank you. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 19 Shevat 5777 • 22:32 14 Feb 2017 (UTC)

Adding new stubs: Portugal, Paraguay

We've discussed the value of adding stubs, compared to fleshing out existing articles, in the past. Now, I can't necessarily stop you from adding stubs if you really want, but at some point an article does not even contain enough information to be a stub.

As an example, you created a large number of stubs about places in Portugal during December. They say no more than '''{{PAGENAME}}''' es una sivdad de [[Portugal]]. In my opinion, in order for an article to be a stub, it's got to say something more than "it's a city in Portugal"—at least tell us where in Portugal it is, or add coordinates, or (correct) population, or something about the place. If this is how you're going to try to avoid my complaints about inaccurate information, it won't work. I will start deleting these pages in about a week if you don't add a little more content to them.

Finally, I'll add: if it's a stub, add {{esbozo}}, please. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 21 Shevat 5777 • 19:43 16 Feb 2017 (UTC)

Similarly, when you create stubs on Paraguayan departments and can't even fill in the field for the capital of the department ... these are just not even stubs. Please fix these. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 21 Shevat 5777 • 21:18 16 Feb 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Marrovi. As I have suggested to you before, I am not sure we need categorization by population at all. But I'm sure we don't need categorization this fine. Big wikis find things like this useful; if anything, excessively fine categorization like this can make it harder, rather than easier, to find things on small wikis. So I'm going to suggest the following trimming of the population categories:

  • All categories for populations less than 1,000: Combined into a category for places with fewer than 1,000. (How would you write this in JS?)
  • >= 1,000 (includes all categories up to the next one)
  • >= 10,000 (includes all categories up to the next one)
  • >= 100,000 (includes all categories up to the next one)
  • >= 500,000 (includes all categories up to the next one)
  • >= 1,000,000 (includes all categories up to the next one)
  • >= 5,000,000 (includes all categories up to the next one)
  • >= 10,000,000 (includes that plus 20,000,000)

Unless I hear from you that this is a problem, I'll start doing this in about a day. (I have tools available to make this go pretty quickly, I think.) If you have a problem with this, please respond. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 26 Shevat 5777 • 16:43 22 Feb 2017 (UTC)

If you coninsider less categories for cities and villages, I stay with you, you can delete categories no necessary. Shalom.--Marrovi (discusión) 17:24 22 Feb 2017 (UTC)

Shavua Tov. I don't mind that you put back in a 50,000—I didn't really think it was necessary—but please leave the sorting keys in the over-category alone. There's a reason they're set up that way.
Hello, it is by are cities more biggest to 50,000 inhabitants, there are many populated places in 10,000.--Marrovi (discusión) 01:27 26 Mar 2017 (UTC)

Nicolás Maduro and related issues.

I cannot mark this page patrolled. Since it is the biography of a living person, I really need you to add a source. Otherwise I will delete the page.

Let me add, once again: You tend to think edits like this, or like the ones I keep asking for on the pages with 33.080, are minor, and either (a) you can get back around to them at some point, or (b) I should just do them, rather than complain to you about them. I will emphasize again that I would do that if it were just an occasional issue. But this is a repeated issue, so I cannot keep cleaning up after you, and you need to take care of them promptly so you don't forget.

Additionally, in a sense I am cleaning up after you anyway: I am going back to all of your numerous page creations and creating Wikidata links for them, something that is necessary but that you do not do. I'm ok doing that; I prefer that to copyediting pages in a language I don't really speak.

So, again: please work with me and do as I ask, rather than being stubborn about it.

Blocked

I needed to get your attention, and this seems the best way to do it without my falling further behind or you continuing to add problematic edits.

  1. I noticed something like 12 pages you edited today where you pasted in a template, perhaps even corrected the Latin-alphabet spelling of the place, but left the wrong Hebrew-alphabet name in place.
I appreciate that you are trying to quickly add some substance to stub-pages, and that's good. But you can't use that template if you can't at least get all the names (approximately) right.
  2. As you keep pasting in that template, notice that דפרטמנטוס is not the preferred spelling. דיפארטאמינטו is (with no ס at the end!). So please fix these before you go any further, and don`t copy and paste the mistake any more.
Same goes for דסטריטו > דיסטריטו.
  3. You continue to misspell:
Using ה instead of א: The letter ה only appears in final position.
Leaving out י for e and sometimes i.
There are others I am not recalling now. But if that was the only problem I'd help you.
  4. You still haven't gone back and corrected the 30.080 pages.
  5. You cut and paste sentences from stub to stub without even bothering to fill in the details. (Example: capital cities.)

I expect that when your block expires, the very first thing you will do is to start to address the points I've made here. If not I will block you again, for increasingly longer periods.

I am much more concerned at this point about the quality of your contributions than about all the pages you have added. Most of the stubs have little value, and I spend a lot of time following you around and cleaning up after you. This has to stop. Sit down and deal with one page at a time, and get things right. If you can't contribute here that way, you are welcome to leave.

End part being copied.

Marrovi, I appreciate that you continue to see me trying to play a positive role. Honestly, I see you doing that as well. Most of the problem here is not about intentions, and it's not even about whether you make positive, constructive edits here. You do.

Really, I go back to what User:Banjo said about Galician Wikipedia. Each one of your edits needs to be checked for accuracy. The point here is that for most serious Wikipedia editors, in any language you can think of, for the most part one does not have to check each one of their edits for accuracy. One can assume they are doing their best to be accurate. Your history, on that wiki, on this wiki, and elsewhere, is that we must check your work for accuracy. That simply takes a lot of time and energy. And on ladwiki, there isn't enough time and energy available to do that easily. I'm a volunteer; I work for a living. I can't spend all my Wikimedia time checking you. And there are not a lot of other regulars here on ladwiki to do that. So I have a problem.

Also, I look at the lengthy sections you have written me over time, and that you wrote in the discussion on Meta, and I think to myself: "Why doesn't he spend that kind of time writing really detailed, well-sourced articles for ladwiki?" I know you're improving a lot of articles; don't misunderstand me. But I would be much happier if you would write two, really good, well-sourced articles per month than for you to create all of these little geography stubs that you create. I know you can do that; why don't you?

If I block you, whether today or in the future, it's not intended as a punishment, though I know it feels that way. It's because you have pretty strongly insisted over time that the problems that I find are minor, that I (or others) could easily fix them, and that I am making too big a deal about simple problems. OK, I'm willing to accept that. But if so, then I must block you from time to time so that you do not continue to add such minor problems. Otherwise I have no hope of keeping up with you. Do you understand that?

I would rather you focus your energy on improving articles you've started here, adding depth and sources, and not adding any more new pages. And I'd rather you do this in a complete way, so that I do not have to keep checking your edits—and so that I don't have to block you because I (and the rest of the community) can't keep up with you. Your block will expire in about three hours; I will try to continue to work productively with you. But I can't keep chasing these "minor" issues. You have to take responsibility yourself. Ediciones

Hola.

We could probably bring in much of the data from Wikidata, too. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 4 Adhar 5777 • 15:52 2 Mar 2017 (UTC)
Is there a way to do it automatically? I see that in Interlingua and Latin they do it like that.--Katxis (discusión) 15:56 2 Mar 2017 (UTC)
Yes. See Medinat Yisrael, which is the only page where I've really experimented with it here.
  • There are some real positives to it, especially for someone like Marrovi, who tends to like to paste templates: A template pasted in with Wikidata calls is automatically going to show the right data, as long as the data are present in Wikidata.
  • There are some drawbacks and caveats, too. (1) When the data one is calling is a number (population or area), these calls work fine. But if you're trying to retrieve a text label, if the label doesn't exist in Ladino, you may get an odd result, requiring the Wikidata entry to be updated. (2) If the data are indirect, you still need to make sure that you are getting the right information, so a blind paste still won't always work. (Example from Medinat Yisrael: The population of Israel is called by using "Population" (property P1082) from item Q801 (Israel, because the page Medinat Yisrael is an alternate page, not the main one). If you then pasted that exact property call into something else, you'd always get Israel's population. So you need to be careful about such things.
Still, there are a lot of benefits to this. I encourage you to try it. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 4 Adhar 5777 • 17:02 2 Mar 2017 (UTC)

What I did at Lisboa (distrito)

So as you can see, what I did was to create data calls to Wikidata to fill in the templates. There are a couple of advantages to this:

  • We don't have to maintain the templates; they update automatically when anyone else updates the data in Wikidata.
  • You can copy and paste the data calls from article to article and for the most part they come out right (at least if they're numerical, like area and population are).

My general proposal is that you start copying and pasting those calls in wherever you are using that template. That said, there are a couple of disadvantages, too:

  • If there aren't data in Wikidata, you have nothing. (For Lisbon District, I copied the data from English Wikipedia into Wikidata. I don't really want to take responsibility for doing that across the board, so we may have some null data calls for a while. I suspect data are more commonly available for cities than for subnational divisions of many countries.
  • When the data call returns text, at least the way Wikidata worked when I looked at it about a year ago, it only returns text here if there is actually a Ladino data label; it does not fall back to a Spanish or English data label. See at Medinat Yisrael, where I did some of this, but had to fill in Ladino data labels for Benjamin Netanyahu, and a few other things. (A bot will usually create those data labels if we have an article here, but where we don't have an article it doesn't happen.)

Too many of our pages here are stubs, and stubs do not make an encyclopedia. So I'm going to encourage you, me and everyone else to try at minimum to get some simple data in all of our stubs. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 18 Adhar 5777 • 14:14 16 Mar 2017 (UTC)

I am very interested to use Wikidata, also I'm adding more information anda dates in many old articles and stubs; I don't understand the codes from wikidata to our articles, I would like to read about this working, I think it0s very interesting as tool. I'm going to propose (and will take care of doing) the following:

  • Creating Kateggoría:Lokalidades por kontinente
  • Moving all the subcategories by country into their respective continental groups
  • Deleting any such subcategories having fewer than three members and putting those cities directly into the continental group.

As an example, the group Lokalidades de Evropa would contain subcategories of Lokalidades de Alemania and Lokalidades de Espanya (among others), and would also directly contain the pages Reikiavik and Helsinki (among others), since their respective country categories have only one entry each. If we ever get to the point of creating more articles for those countries—stubs, not articles—we can recreate the categories. But right now we just have more categories than we need. Reasoning same as last time. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 23 Adhar 5777 • 15:29 21 Mar 2017 (UTC)

Portals and Wikiprojects

Hi, Marrovi. If you want to be ambitious about all this, there is a usual structure for pages like this. If you really think you really want to do this, here's what we ought to do:

  • Portals are usually created on pages in their own (Portal) namespace. I'd need to request such a namespace be created on this wiki.
  • Wikiprojects are usually created either (a) on pages in their own (Wikiproject) namespace (e.g., eswiki) or on a page in Wikipedia namespace (e.g., enwiki). We could go either way on this.
  • Pieces of portal pages that are used nowhere else (like your template {{Meksikanos}}) are usually placed on a subpage of the portal (like [[Portal:Meksiko/Meksikanos]].

I think it's important to stick to this approach so that future editors can find their way around more easily. Are you ok with that? StevenJ81 (discusión) • 25 Adhar 5777 • 18:15 22 Mar 2017 (UTC)

Shalom, yes of course, is very well.--Marrovi (discusión) 14:36 23 Mar 2017 (UTC)

Please merge Villa del Carbón and Villa del Carbón (belediye). No other Wikipedia has two separate articles. Thanks. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 1 Nissán 5777 • 13:33 28 Mar 2017 (UTC)

Villa del Carbón is a big municipality, it's have got many populated places and diferent geography, Villa del Carbón town there is many attractions and topics. Other municipalities are only one article as Tonanitla or Papalotla, their area is very small compared with big municipalities. Other example; is big cities with small territory as Monterrey, San Nicolás de los Garza or Zapopan. Regards.--Marrovi (discusión) 14:09 28 Mar 2017 (UTC)

Spaces as group delimiters in numbers

Hi. Was just looking at Santo Domingo. In the main body of the text, if you are going to write a number as 1 402 749 (as opposed to 1,402,749 or 1.402.749 or even 1402749), you need to include nonbreaking spaces (nbsp;) so the number doesn't break wrong in the text. URGENT: Israel, not Izrael

I checked the spelling at Aki Yerushalayim, and they use Israel, not Izrael. (The pronunciation in Hebrew and other Jewish languages, including JS and Yiddish, is an "s" sound, not a "z" sound.) I've fixed a lot of these, but I need you to fix the rest, please. This is a very important topic on this wiki; please make it a high priority. Thank you. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 8 Nissán 5777 • 04:14 4 Abr 2017 (UTC)

Shalom, I'm reading about this case; but Yisrael no Ladino language and no Turkish variant, maybe Hebrew language, Israel is correct in this language. Thanks!.--Marrovi (discusión) 04:21 4 Abr 2017 (UTC)
Please do NOT change any Yisrael appearances. That's correct in Hebrew, and it's one of the words that survives in JS without being made Spanish. (As an analogy, sometimes the Ashkenazi language is "Yiddish", and sometimes "Idish".) So anything that is Yisrael should stay that way. Anything that is Israel should stay that way. Anything that is Izrael should change to Israel. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 8 Nissán 5777 • 14:39 4 Abr 2017 (UTC)
Ok, no problem; but old Spaniards and Turkish diaspora don't say Yisrael, only for influence of Hebrew in Israel, o maybe Yidish language, Yisrael no Aki Yerushalayim.--Marrovi (discusión) 14:51 4 Abr 2017 (UTC)
Clearly AY uses Israel, not Yisrael. But keep in mind that the most reliable orthography, where it exists, is the Hebrew-script orthography. In writing, in Hebrew script, that word is always ישראל (Yisrael), even though Sephardic pronunciation normally drops the leading "Y" consonant. So there may be legitimate orthographies that retain the "y" because of the Hebrew orthography, and I don't want people like you and me, who are not expert, to make that decision. If Usador:Universal Life or Usador:Ezrasarano want to make such changes, they can make that call. You and I should not. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 8 Nissán 5777 • 16:21 4 Abr 2017 (UTC)
Ok, no problem with this discussion. I'm understanding all interviews in this videos [1] [2], [3] [4] [5], I'm not Israeli but my ancestors spoke a similar language as Greek Ladino or Moroccan Ladino, we doesn't speak Mexican Ladino language but we speak a very very similar words in our Spanish, the old people use many Spanish colonial words when talk with us. --Marrovi (discusión) 16:54 4 Abr 2017 (UTC)
Concerning the spelling of ישראל in Latin script, Izrael is positively incorrect - ש outrules any z sound. Marrovi, in fact, 'Yisrael' is used in several older JS texts including Me'am Loez. The initial Y is used consistently on names or places starting with yud i.e. Yahakov, Yosef, Yshak, etc. so I personally use 'Yisrael'; but it's true that Israel is used as well, and not because of Yiddish or Modern Hebrew, but probably because of French influence during the times of the Alliance Israélite Universelle. Marovi, I haven't had enough time to correct your #DIRIJAR Pero or #DIRIJAR Monterrey articles, but I must say there are, with all due respect, some seriously unacceptable mistakes. For instance, words like 'olfato' (senso del guesmo), 'kazeria' (kavza), 'kolonizadores' (kolonistas), or phrases like 'rendir homenaje' (azer omaje), 'sin embargo' (yine) and 'orden de aprehension'(aprezamiento) appear too frequently in your articles. You must do some serious research before writing an article; don't assume a word spelled with k and z, or an archaic word in Spanish, automatically becomes JS. Of course I agree that there are shared words between Mexican Spanish and Djudeo-espanyol - both share a pre-1492 lexicon - but, and I repeat this from a Ladino-speaking Turkish rabbi born in Mexico City, differences far exceed similarities. I would suggest that whenever you - or any other uzador - are in doubt, make sure the word or phrase appears in a *legitimate* source such as the dictionary at Folkmasa.org or the many Ladino documents available for free at Stanford's Sephardic Studies Project or the University of Washington's Sephardic Studies Digital Library Collection. Saludos, Ezra. --Ezrasarano (discusión) 9 Nissan 5777 5:58 (UTC)

More stubs

Buena tarde, Marrovi. I have really asked you not to keep creating new geography stubs. This wiki has too many stubs already, and we need more full articles. I'm getting frustrated!

  • Te he rogado que no sigas creando esbozos.

Olá Marrovi, obrigado pelas modificações feitas no artigo "kirguztan".

@Sergio Junior Guitarist: (using Google translate from English) Oi, Sergio.
  • La Primera Oja (OF) usa ortografia de influência francesa.
  • לה פרימירה אוזֿה usa o alfabeto hebraico e é o original.

Hebrew alphabet spelling

Hi, Marrovi. Please ask for help on this:

  • Yes, I do think we should have the Hebrew language spelling in country-level articles' infoboxes.
  • No, you're not getting it right.
  • And sometimes, you're still being sloppy. (The Tajikstan article says "Kirguzstan" in Hebrew letters. Same type of problem as always.) It's not as frequent as it used to be, but please be more careful.

Tus contribuciones en la Vikipedya

Shalom Marrovi.

US State Abbreviations (for templates and any other purpose)

Hi, Marrovi. Don't guess about this. Use the list at en:List of U.S. state abbreviations. For the 50 US states and the District of Columbia (federal district containing Washington), the abbreviations to use are the ones in the column "ISO", which are the same as the ANSI and USPS abbreviations (except for the "US-" portion). Other versions are either obsolete or are used only in specific settings.

Similarly, for Canadian provinces, use the list at en:Canadian postal abbreviations for provinces and territories, again using the ISO column. StevenJ81 (discusión) • 14 Elul 5777 • 17:49 5 Set 2017 (UTC)

Lingua kastilyana

Shalom, Marrovi.

Proposed site ban for User:Marrovi

I apologize for writing this in English, but I wish my reasoning to be clear.

I take this step reluctantly. But I am going to propose that Marrovi be banned from Vikipedya. That ban would be enforced by an indefinite block, and can be appealed after one year.

Reasoning

I have long given Marrovi the benefit of the doubt. I think he is an honorable person. I think he has tried hard to learn Judeo-Spanish, and to contribute here to the best of his ability. He has not violated the limitation we placed on him as to how frequently he can create new pages. And as he claims crypto-Jewish ancestry, at a certain point this should be a community that is open to him and that welcomes him. Still, at the end of the day, if I had to summarize the problem with Marrovi briefly, it would be that

Marrovi is simply too high-maintenance for us here. It takes too much work to keep his contributions acceptable. And we do not have sufficient editor resources to do that work properly.

Marrovi just avoided a global ban on substantially these grounds a little over a year ago. (See m:Requests for comment/Global ban for user Marrovi.) At that, the global ban was avoided because individual wikis were handling things locally, usually by individual blocks or bans. I can tell you that Stewards and similarly experienced Wikimedians have told me privately that I/we have been, perhaps, too patient, and that Marrovi's edits were blockworthy as being disruptive to the community.

We have recently had discussions on the Wikimedia Incubator about Marrovi's contributions to Nahuatl-language test projects. And it has become clear to me that at the end of the day, there is still something Marrovi doesn't understand about contributing here on Wikimedia projects like Vikipedya or Incubator:

  • These are collaborative projects, and it is not enough for contributions to be correct. They must also be accepted by community consensus. But the community doesn't want to spend all of its time determining consensus on one person's contributions, especially when it finds so many substantial mistakes. When a community is in that kind of situation, the project becomes a less pleasant place to contribute, and people leave.

It is this, more than anything else, that leads me to this proposal. I think the poor quality of much of Vikipedya—we have over 2,300 stubs—has made prospective contributors reluctant to come here. And while Marrovi has contributed some good material, much more of the material is poor, or consists only of stubs. On the whole, I think he has been a negative to the project. I think it is time that Vikipedya moves on, cleans up, and tries to bring some new contributors in to improve the project.

I would add one other point. If we had a larger community here already—one where there were sufficient contributors fluent in Judeo-Spanish to keep an eye on Marrovi's contributions—I could justify continuing to give him the benefit of the doubt. If, in one year, or three, or five, we have that type of larger contributor community, we can consider whether or not it is reasonable to lift this ban. But until and unless that happens, I don't think we can afford him here any more.

Response from Marrovi

Discussion

I am writing in English as I presume everybody in here understands this language. I've read both [long] texts stating each one's opinion on the ban and I would like to contribute with mine. Taking into account how small this Wikipedia is (we are Steven, UniversalLife, MaorX, Marrovi and myself) having conflicts is something that shouldn't happen and produces more harm that good so, the sooner we get this solved, the better.

Firstly I would like to thank both of you for your work here. First, to Steven, who has been of great help with his technical knowledge about Wikipedia and for cleaning it up.Second, to you Marrovi, because of your work here. I have no doubt that you've tried your best to learn Ladino and that you've made a great effort trying to improve your language skills. I also understand how Wikipedia can be very addictive and we always try to create new articles (the more the better) and to improve the ones already created (it has happened to me as well).

Secondly, regarding the proposal to ban Marrovi, the main reason is that, given the small community we are here and given the fact that only two people out of five (i.e. MaorX and UniversalLife) speak the language, we cannot cope with the amount of articles being created by Marrovi because they need to be corrected as they have errors. On the grounds that the foundational idea of this project is to be a voluntary and collaborative one, and that, as aforementioned, we have very little people to contribute, we cannot make them spend their time here just correcting articles made by other collaborator -of course, everyone makes errors, but when these appear on almost every single page, it means loads of work that can derive into 1) frustration for the experts as they have to spend their time clearing up instead of writing new articles and 2) reluctance from possible contributors when they see the state of the Vikipedya and its poor quality- I vote, for a blockage of Marrovi not because he has "violated any rule of Wikipedia's code" but because, sadly, in our community, we don't have the resources to cope for his enthusiastic work. I do not give any time (neither a year nor any other date) for it should be the time that takes to clear up the whole project and reopen it anew and I don't know how long will take.

Thirly, and this is a private comment based on why I read above, I would like to kindly ask you, Marrovi, to please don't take this ban as something personal as I understand from your comments, which I quote now:

I personally believe, that comments like these are not acceptable and do not contribute at all to the debate but just create more tension on a very delicate topic. Also, the debate should be done respecting every single point of view and not launching personal attacks to another member who is trying to find the best solution for the community. I don understand your frustration (I have been banned in other Wikipedia as well) but this is not a reason to use the tone and language used in the comment above. Besides, Steven has stated that:

I have long given Marrovi the benefit of the doubt. I think he is an honorable person. I think he has tried hard to learn Judeo-Spanish, and to contribute here to the best of his ability. He has not violated the limitation we placed on him as to how frequently he can create new pages..

So he clearly pointed out that this is not a personal attack against Marrovi and, besides, stated very clearly the reason for blockage:

Marrovi is simply too high-maintenance for us here. It takes too much work to keep his contributions acceptable. And we do not have sufficient editor resources to do that work properly.

It is sad but it is like that. I have already developed that argument before and I do support it. Nothing personal against Marrovi, nothing to do with a complot but simply a fact, the fact that we do not have enough resources to cope with the amount of work generated by Marrovi, which means correcting each single article created by him (a lot of them being stubs).

Last but not least, I found there is some secondary debate regarding Nahua languages which has no relationship, at least on its surface, to our community. Please abstain to mention it on this conversation and let's focus on the topic itself. Katxis (discusión) 11:59 12 abr 2018 (UTC)[responder]
