Discussion with user Eugrus at enwiki on parallel alphabet techniques (copied)[trocar | trocar el manadero]

I read your request and will take care of it. StevenJ81 (talk) 13:45, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

  • Thanks! :) --eugrus (talk) 13:46, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Пожалуста. (Did I spell that right?) And: {{done}}
By the way: I went back and looked at your contributions at ladwiki, and this alphabet switcher idea looked pretty interesting. How does it work? Does the alphabet switcher automatically transcribe between alphabets, or do contributors still have to do that manually?
  • If it's the former, there is some challenge in that there are several different Latin-script orthographies in Ladino, and they're used inconsistently on ladwiki. But maybe we could try.
  • If it's the latter, it will never happen. The wiki is a pretty quiet one. I'm a new (temporary) administrator, and at that don't really speak Djudeo-Espanyol. I'm mostly trying to do some formatting and administrative work there now. But I'll never get enough help to do all that transcription.
In any event, there are fewer than 50 articles in main space in Hebrew script; the vast majority of pages are written in some version or other of the Latin script. Then there are maybe another 20-30 templates and categories that are twinned. So unless this would work automatically, it is just not going to happen. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:01, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Almost - it's "Пожалуйста" :) As to the alphabet switcher, it would use one alphabet as the base for the source text and automatically convert the letters to another alphabetical system. For instance you can see the same article of the Kazakh Wikipedia in Arabic sript: [1] or in Latin script: [2] ,but if you edit it, it's always Cyrillic "inside": [3] I don't know for sure how difficult the technical implementation would be for a certain orpho-alphabetical pair and which alphabet is more appropriate as the source alphabet in any case. I think you could ask further on the community pages of the Kazakh or Serbian Wikipedia if you have questions. If the Ladino orthography in the Jewish script is more standardized than in Latin, the Jewish script would probably be easier to use as the source base for conversion. --eugrus (talk) 14:19, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
I'll have a further look. I'm guessing we'll have a hard time with it, because the mapping is not 1-1 (in any direction). But we'll see ... thanks for your help. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:20, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Basically, here are the orthography correspondences in Kazakh, if you are interested: en:Kazakh_alphabets#Correspondence_chart --eugrus (talk) 15:25, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
It helps an awful lot when there is a pretty fixed correspondence. I'm going to copy this discussion into my sandbox at ladwiki, if you don't mind, for reference. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:56, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
I did irrevocably agree to release my contribution under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL, so I am not in a position to argue anyways --eugrus (talk) 16:00, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Hot Cat/Gadgets[trocar | trocar el manadero]

Hello, this is not too difficult. The process is explained at commons:Help:Gadget-HotCat#Using the Commons version of HotCat on another wiki. Let me add the following (I am referring to the five steps listed on that page):
  1. Step 1: You can skip this step.
  2. Step 2: This is easy.
  3. Step 3: Here, you need to do two things:
    1. First, create a local page "MediaWiki:Gadget-HotCat" on your wiki with a one-line description of HotCat. This description will appear in Special:Preferences to describe the HotCat gadget. You can take a look at en:MediaWiki:Gadget-HotCat as an example.
    2. Second, add the line "* HotCat[ResourceLoader]|HotCat.js" to the local page "MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition" on your wiki.
By now, HotCat is working on your wiki!
  4. Step 4: This is optional but useful. Take a look at MediaWiki:Gadget-HotCat.js/local defaults as an example.
  5. Step 5: You can probably skip this step.
